Fall Armyworms in Texas Lawns: How to Catch Them Before They Take the Yard

Fall armyworms can strip a Texas lawn fast. Here's the flashlight test, the treat-today threshold, and whether your grass actually comes back.
Short answer: get out at first light with a flashlight and part the grass at the thatch line. Fall armyworms feed mostly at night and hide down in the canopy during the day, so by the time you can see damage from the driveway, the caterpillars that caused it are already in their last and hungriest stage. If you find two or more caterpillars a half-inch or longer per square foot, treat that day — not that weekend.
August through October is the window in Texas, and it is the single most abrupt turf problem a homeowner will ever deal with. Chinch bugs take weeks. Drought stress takes weeks. Armyworms can take a lawn from green to brown between two evenings on the same patio.
Here's how to tell whether it's actually armyworms, when it's worth treating, and — the question everybody asks second — whether the grass comes back.
What is a fall armyworm, and why does it show up in late summer?
The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is not a worm. It's the caterpillar stage of a night-flying moth, and it's called an armyworm because when a hatch runs out of food it moves across turf in a visible front, the way an army does.
Two field marks identify it, and you only need one of them. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's identification guide points to the inverted white "Y" on the dark head capsule, and to the four black bumps arranged in a square on the second-to-last body segment. Mature larvae run about an inch to an inch and a half, in shades from green to tan to nearly black, with three narrow pale stripes down the back.
The timing is the part most homeowners get wrong. This is not a pest that has been in your yard all summer building up. It flies in.
According to Oklahoma State University Extension, whose range data covers the same southern-plains population that moves through Texas:
- The fall armyworm cannot survive freezing winters. It overwinters in the pupal stage in South Texas and along the Gulf, and it does not overwinter in North Texas.
- Populations build in South Texas in early spring, and successive generations move northward as the season progresses.
- A single female moth can lay up to 2,000 eggs.
- The complete life cycle takes about 30 days in summer heat — versus 80 to 90 days in cool weather — and the larvae pass through six instars in roughly 14 days.
- There are four to five generations per year in the southern part of the range, with feeding extending into October or even November in warm years.
Put those together and you get the behavior Texas homeowners actually experience: nothing, nothing, nothing — then a lawn full of caterpillars. The moths arrive, lay, and the eggs hatch into larvae so small they do essentially no visible damage for the first ten days or so. It's the final instar that does the overwhelming majority of the eating. That's why the damage looks like it happened overnight. In a sense it did.
Why Austin gets armyworms before Dallas does
This is the part that doesn't make it into national lawn-care advice, and it matters if you own property in more than one Texas metro.
Because the fall armyworm overwinters only in the southern part of the state and marches north generation by generation, the arrival date is a function of latitude — and Root's service footprint happens to run straight up that corridor. Austin, Waco, Killeen-Temple, and Dallas–Fort Worth are strung out along roughly 200 miles of I-35, in exactly the order the generations move. Central Texas lawns typically see pressure ahead of North Texas lawns in the same season.
The practical consequence: an armyworm report from a neighbor an hour south of you is a genuine early warning, and it is worth acting on. If Austin-area lawns are getting hit in mid-August, Waco and Killeen-Temple are the near-term watch and the DFW suburbs are the next one. That is a scouting signal you can actually use, and it's free.
There's a second regional split that decides how much the damage costs you, and it's about grass, not geography.
Will my grass come back after armyworms?
Usually — but it depends heavily on what you're growing, and that varies by metro.
Fall armyworms are leaf feeders. They eat blades. They do not eat roots, and they do not eat rhizomes. That's the good news, and it's the single most important difference between armyworms and the other late-summer turf problems.
- Bermudagrass — dominant in much of the DFW market and common on Central Texas sunny lots — spreads by both above-ground stolons and below-ground rhizomes. Even chewed to the dirt, the underground growing points are untouched. Watered and fed, bermuda typically greens back up in two to three weeks.
- St. Augustine — the default lawn across much of the Austin metro — spreads by stolons only, above ground. There is no underground reserve. If the larvae take the blades but leave the runners and crowns intact, it recovers. If they were dense enough and stayed long enough to chew into the crowns, that area may not fill back in on its own and will need plugging or sod.
So the same infestation, on the same day, is a three-week inconvenience on a Frisco bermuda lawn and a potential replacement job on an Austin St. Augustine lawn. That asymmetry is the real reason to scout early in Central Texas rather than wait and see.
One more thing that changes the outcome: drought-stressed turf recovers worse. A lawn that goes into an armyworm hit already thin from a hot, dry August has less stored energy to push new growth. Watering after the damage is not cosmetic — it's the recovery.
Is it armyworms, grubs, chinch bugs, or drought?
Four things brown out a Texas lawn in August, and they call for four different responses. Getting this wrong costs a season.

The fastest discriminator in the field is simple: grab a handful of grass and pull. If it comes up in your hand with no root resistance, you're looking at grubs. If it stays put and the blades are chewed to ragged stubs, you're looking at armyworms.
How do I check for armyworms? Two tests, both free
The flashlight check. Go out at daybreak — around 6:00 to 6:30 a.m. — kneel at the edge of a suspicious area, and part the canopy down to the thatch line with your fingers. Armyworms feed at night and settle into the thatch as it warms. You are looking for the inverted Y and the ragged, chewed blade edges. Midday inspection from standing height finds nothing and gives false comfort.
The soap flush. Mix a couple of tablespoons of dish soap into a gallon or two of water and pour it slowly over a one-square-foot area at the green/brown boundary. Wait a few minutes. The irritant drives caterpillars up out of the thatch where you can count them. It's the same technique used to flush sod webworms and cutworms, and it's the standard way to turn "I think I have something" into a number.
Look for the advancing edge, not the middle. The dead zone has already been eaten and abandoned; the caterpillars are in the green grass at the border, moving.
When should I treat — and when should I let it ride?
Use a threshold, not a feeling.
AgriLife's published action threshold for pastures and hay is two or more caterpillars a half-inch or longer per square foot. For a home lawn the practical bar is at least that conservative, because a residential yard has no grazing value to trade off and St. Augustine has no underground recovery reserve. If you find two or more per square foot, or you can see late-stage caterpillars in the canopy without looking hard, treat that day.
Two timing rules make the difference between a treatment that works and one that doesn't:
- Small larvae are far easier to kill than large ones. By the last instar they're both harder to control and doing nearly all of the damage. Catching them early is not just faster — it's the difference in whether control works at all.
- Treat in the evening, not at midday. They surface to feed after dark. An application that goes down where they'll be, when they'll be there, does more with less product.
On products, AgriLife's lawn guidance notes that homeowners can use granular or liquid pyrethroid products labeled for armyworms in turf, and that spinosad is a softer option that is easier on beneficial insects and pollinators. Whatever goes down, the label is the law — follow the rate, the site listing, and the re-entry interval on the container.
And mow and water afterward. Recovery is a growth problem once the caterpillars are gone.
Can you prevent armyworms?
Honestly: not in the sense most people mean.
No treatment program stops a moth from flying into your yard and laying eggs. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Fall armyworm pressure is a regional, weather-driven event — it varies enormously year to year and nobody controls the flights.
What a program actually changes is how long the caterpillars go unnoticed. That's the entire ballgame, because the damage is concentrated in the last few days of a 14-day larval stage. A lawn that's on a recurring visit schedule gets looked at by somebody whose job is to part the canopy and check the thatch line, in a season when checking is the whole intervention. A lawn that gets looked at when the homeowner notices brown gets looked at after the fact.
The other half is turf health. Dense, well-watered, properly fertilized grass doesn't repel armyworms — but it recovers from them, and thin drought-stressed turf often doesn't.

Should I treat my whole lawn or just the damaged area? Treat the damaged area and the green grass around it. The caterpillars are at the advancing edge, moving into undamaged turf — the brown center has already been fed on and abandoned. Treating only the visible damage misses the population.
Can I prevent armyworms from coming back? Not entirely. Moths fly in from outside and no program prevents that, and pressure varies year to year with weather. What changes the outcome is early detection during the August-to-October window and keeping turf watered and dense enough to recover — thin, drought-stressed grass recovers worst.
