Yellowjackets often seem worse in Texas during September and October because their colonies are near peak size, food competition is increasing, and more workers are defending the nest. The highest-risk situations are usually hidden ground nests and wall-void nests near places people mow, walk, play, or work.
Fall activity does not mean every striped wasp needs treatment. Paper wasps on an exposed eave and yellowjackets pouring from a hole beside a sidewalk are different problems. Correct identification—and finding the actual nest entrance—matters before deciding what to do.
Across Austin, Waco, Killeen-Temple, and DFW, the calendar is only part of the story. Warm soil, irrigated lawns, shaded foundations, and long stretches without a hard freeze can keep colonies active well into fall. A hot September in Austin may look different from a cooler October in Dallas, but neither metro follows a perfectly predictable cutoff.

DFW often gets meaningful cold fronts before Austin and Waco, but one cool morning does not make a nest inactive. A protected nest in a south-facing wall, stone border, or irrigated lawn can remain busy during the next warm afternoon.
Where do yellowjackets build ground nests in Texas yards?
Ground nests are often built in existing cavities, not holes excavated entirely from scratch. An abandoned rodent tunnel, void beneath a landscape stone, gap beside a buried utility, or eroded pocket under a root can become a nest site.
In Central Texas, common risk areas include:
- Edges of limestone walkways and flagstone patios
- Cracks between clay soil and a slab or driveway
- Irrigated turf beside a dry, compacted section of lawn
- Retaining-wall bases and landscape timbers
- Holes around sprinkler boxes, pipes, or utility penetrations
- Brushy fence lines where old animal burrows go unnoticed
- Shaded soil beneath decks, sheds, and dense groundcover
The entrance may be no wider than a finger. What gives it away is usually repeated, organized traffic: insects entering and leaving the same exact point every few seconds during a warm part of the day.
That pattern is different from wasps cruising over a lawn. Paper wasps may collect fibers or hunt caterpillars, while cicada killers may fly low over dry soil around individual burrows. Yellowjacket workers typically form a more consistent route to one shared colony entrance.
In rocky Austin and Killeen-Temple neighborhoods, the opening you see may not sit directly over the nest chamber. Fractured limestone and construction backfill can create a hidden path extending beneath a patio edge or slab. Randomly soaking the visible hole may therefore miss the colony while increasing defensive activity at the surface.
Where do yellowjackets hide inside walls and structures?
Yellowjackets can also use voids behind siding, masonry, fascia, soffits, roof transitions, and exterior wall penetrations. They are not eating the building material; they are using an existing protected space.
Look for repeated traffic at places such as:
- A siding gap beside a window or door
- A hole where cable, refrigerant, or plumbing lines enter
- Cracked mortar or an open masonry weep area
- A fascia or soffit seam
- A gap behind stone veneer
- The joint between an attached patio cover and the house

How can you tell a yellowjacket nest from other Texas wasps?
The most useful clues are body shape, nest location, and traffic pattern—not color alone. Several Texas wasps have yellow markings, and fast-moving insects are easy to misidentify from a distance.
Yellowjackets generally have compact bodies with a clearly defined waist and bold contrasting markings. Unlike the long-legged paper wasps commonly seen under Texas eaves, yellowjackets usually keep their legs closer to the body in flight. Their enclosed paper comb is typically hidden underground or inside a protected cavity rather than hanging openly.
