In much of Texas, the disease commonly called “brown patch” is more precisely called large patch when it affects warm-season turf such as St. Augustine, zoysia, or centipedegrass. The fungus can be active before an entire circle turns brown, so the changing outer edge of a patch is often more useful than its dry-looking center.

Texas lawns create their own set of challenges. Central Texas neighborhoods frequently combine shallow limestone, compacted clay, uneven grading, and irrigation systems designed to cover irregular lots. A lawn can therefore stay soaked beside a driveway while becoming dry only a few yards away.

Timing varies across the state, too. Austin, Waco, and Killeen-Temple may experience warm afternoons deep into fall, while DFW lawns often cool earlier and remain damp longer after cold fronts. That difference can shift the visible onset of large patch by several weeks, even when the lawns have similar grass and irrigation schedules.


What Does Brown Patch Look Like in a Texas Lawn?

Brown patch usually begins as an irregular yellow or light-green area that expands into a tan or brown patch. In St. Augustine, the patch may form a ring several feet across, but it does not always create a perfect circle.

Common signs include:

  • Yellowing or browning that spreads outward over several days
  • A darker, orange, or reddish-brown margin around an active patch
  • Grass blades that pull away easily from the runners

The roots and stolons may remain alive even when the blades detach. That distinction matters because a lawn affected by large patch can often produce new leaves after disease pressure subsides. It may look dead from the street without being dead below the damaged foliage.

In Central Texas, inspect low areas near sidewalks, stone borders, downspout outlets, and the downhill side of sloped lots. Thin soil over limestone can cause water to move laterally and collect in small pockets. Will Brown Patch Go Away on Its Own?

Visible activity may slow when the weather becomes colder or drier, but the underlying fungus can remain associated with the turf. A patch that appears to “go away” during winter may return when conditions become favorable again.

The lawn’s recovery depends on how much living stolon and root tissue remains. St. Augustine may regrow leaves from surviving runners after temperatures support active growth, but severely thinned areas can be invaded by weeds before the canopy closes.
