A brown Texas lawn between November and February is usually dormant, not dead—especially when the color change is fairly even across the yard. Dormant grass still has living crowns, roots, rhizomes, or stolons beneath the brown blades; dead grass does not recover when temperatures and normal growing conditions return.

The fastest way to tell is to inspect several areas, check the grass at the soil line, and look at the pattern. Uniform straw-brown color points toward seasonal dormancy. Irregular patches, bare soil, rotting crowns, or turf that lifts away easily point toward damage or death.

Texas lawns do not enter and leave dormancy on a single statewide schedule. A shaded lawn in Frisco may brown weeks before a sunny lawn in South Austin, while a protected Waco courtyard can stay partly green after exposed areas have gone dormant. Grass species, soil depth, irrigation, tree cover, wind exposure, and the first hard freeze all affect timing.

Central Texas adds another complication: many lawns sit over shallow limestone, dense clay, or builder-grade soil with uneven depth. One part of a yard may retain moisture while another dries quickly over rock, creating brown areas that resemble dormancy but are actually chronic stress. North Texas clay can stay wet and cold for long periods, producing a different set of symptoms.

What does a dormant Texas lawn look like?

Dormancy is a survival response. Warm-season grasses slow or stop visible growth when colder weather and shorter days make active growth inefficient. The leaf blades lose green color, but the plant’s protected growing points remain alive.

Typical signs of winter dormancy include:

  • A gradual change from green to tan or straw-brown
  • Similar coloring across most sunny portions of the lawn
  • Brown blades with firm crowns near the soil surface
  • Stolons or runners that remain attached and resist a gentle tug
  • Some green tissue in protected areas near foundations, sidewalks, or south-facing walls
  • A pattern that broadly follows temperature exposure rather than irrigation coverage

In Austin-area lawns, Bermuda grass may remain green in warm, exposed areas well into late fall, then turn brown quickly after a strong cold front. St. Augustine can hold color longer near heat-retaining stone, brick, or concrete but lose color in open areas first. Zoysia often develops a more consistent tan appearance.

DFW lawns generally enter dormancy earlier because nighttime temperatures and freeze conditions arrive sooner. A lawn in Dallas or Frisco can be fully brown while the same grass species is still partly green farther south. That difference is normal and does not, by itself, indicate a lawn-care failure.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Turfgrass Selection for Texas describes this as a normal trait of the state’s warm-season lawns: most warm-season turfgrasses will turn straw-colored after the first frost and may go dormant during the winter in some Texas regions, while the plants keep the aboveground and belowground structures they use to recover (Turfgrass Selection for Texas). The same guide puts the ideal air-temperature range for active warm-season growth at 80 to 95°F, which is why a brown January lawn is usually a calendar issue, not a failure. St. Augustine is the exception to watch in North Texas: AgriLife notes it may be killed by more severe winters in the northern one-third of the state, so a DFW St. Augustine lawn that never greens is not automatically “just dormant.”

How can I test whether brown grass is dormant or dead?

Do not judge the entire lawn from the leaf tips. Winter leaf blades are supposed to look brown. The useful evidence is lower on the plant, where the crown and runners meet the soil.

Use these tests in several parts of the yard:

  1. Part the brown blades. Look near the soil line for firm crowns or small areas of pale green tissue.
  2. Scratch a runner or stem. Lightly scrape the outer surface of a stolon. Moist, pale, or greenish tissue beneath the surface suggests it is alive. Dry, brittle tissue throughout is more concerning.
  3. Use the tug test. Gently pull a small handful of turf. Dormant grass usually remains anchored. Dead turf with extensive root loss may lift like loose carpet.
  4. Bend the runners. Living stolons usually have some flexibility. Dead runners tend to snap cleanly and crumble.
  5. Compare several locations. Test sunny turf, shaded turf, the edge of a brown patch, and an apparently healthy area. One sample can mislead you.

Be careful with the tug test in clay soil. When Central Texas clay is wet, shallow-rooted turf may release more easily even if part of the plant is alive. When that same soil dries, it can become hard enough to make weak roots appear firmly anchored. Use the crown, scratch, and pattern tests together.

A single warm January afternoon is not a reliable test. Warm-season turf responds to sustained soil warmth, not one mild day between cold fronts. Waiting for the normal spring green-up window provides better evidence than trying to force an immediate response with extra water or fertilizer.

When should Texas lawns go dormant and turn green again?

There is no exact calendar date because dormancy tracks weather, soil temperature, turf species, and the lawn’s microclimate. In general, browning begins during late fall or early winter and may continue through February.

North Texas typically sees earlier dormancy and later green-up than Central Texas. Within DFW, open lawns exposed to north winds often turn brown before protected lawns near buildings. In Austin, Waco, and Killeen-Temple, south-facing turf may retain patches of color through much of winter.

Spring green-up is also uneven:

  • Bermuda grass may begin showing green shoots in sunny areas before shaded sections respond.
  • St. Augustine often wakes unevenly where trees, fences, and homes keep the soil cool.
  • Zoysia can remain tan after nearby Bermuda begins growing.
  • Lawns over shallow limestone may green first where soil is deeper and moisture is more stable.
  • North-facing slopes and areas shaded by live oaks may lag behind the rest of a Central Texas yard.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Grayson County office puts a number on that wait: soil temperatures above 65°F are necessary for significant growth of stolons, rhizomes, and roots, and warm-season turf grows best with air temperatures above 80°F (Warm season grass vigor and green-up, April 2023). A single warm spell does not meet that threshold. AgriLife’s bermudagrass calendar adds a second timing rule: do not apply nutrients to bermudagrass lawns before full green-up in the spring (Bermudagrass Home Lawn Management Calendar).

If most of the lawn has resumed growth while one area remains completely brown and brittle, that area deserves closer inspection. A lag of several days or even longer can reflect shade and soil differences. A patch that never produces new growth is more likely dead.

Why is only part of my lawn brown?

Patchy browning is less consistent with simple dormancy, but it does not automatically mean the grass is dead. Texas yards contain many small microclimates, and winter makes their differences easier to see.

Common causes include:

  • Shade: Turf under live oaks, cedar elms, fences, and north-facing walls receives less winter sunlight and stays colder.
  • Shallow soil: In limestone-heavy parts of Austin and the Hill Country, grass over thin soil may enter stress sooner than turf only a few feet away.
  • Drainage: Dense clay in Austin, Waco, and DFW can hold water around roots after winter rain.
  • Irrigation gaps: Misaligned heads and blocked spray patterns create recurring shapes that often match the system’s coverage.
  • Foot traffic: Holiday gatherings, pets, service paths, and repeated shortcuts can compact wet winter soil.
  • Construction debris: Buried rock, concrete, or fill soil can create sharply defined areas with poor rooting.
  • Disease: Cool, damp weather may favor turf diseases that create rings, arcs, or patches rather than uniform browning.

Large patch is one disease associated with warm-season turf during cool, wet periods. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s E-633 factsheet identifies it as Rhizoctonia solani and notes it is the most chronic and economically important disease of both St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass in Texas. The disease occurs when temperature is below 70°F, thrives when the soil is wet, and is especially severe in turf that is poorly drained and over-fertilized. The first symptom is circular, discolored patches whose outer borders are orange or yellow; diseased shoots pull easily from the sheath where they attach to the stolons (How to Diagnose and Manage Large Patch Disease). The Texas Plant Disease Handbook adds that patches can reach several yards in diameter and commonly develop in fall, winter, and spring when these grasses are approaching or emerging from dormancy, evening temperatures are below 68°F, and rainfall usually increases.

Extension services recommend diagnosing the turf species, weather pattern, drainage, and visible symptoms before choosing a fungicide or other treatment (How to Diagnose and Manage Large Patch Disease). Any pesticide or lawn product must be selected and applied according to its label. Is a brown winter lawn caused by drought, chinch bugs, or grub worms?

Usually not. From November through February, cold-weather dormancy and winter disease are generally more useful starting points than classic summer pest diagnoses.

Chinch bug damage is most commonly evaluated during hot weather, especially in sunny St. Augustine lawns. It can resemble drought stress because affected grass wilts, yellows, and turns brown. Grub injury is also more meaningfully diagnosed during the part of the year when larvae are actively feeding near the root zone and turf symptoms match that lifecycle.

That seasonal distinction matters. A dry-looking patch in an Austin lawn during August calls for a different diagnostic sequence than a straw-colored lawn after a January freeze. Likewise, weak spring turf in Waco may reflect damage that began earlier, but finding brown grass in winter does not prove an active grub problem.

Do not apply an insecticide simply because the lawn is brown. First confirm that the target pest is present and that its activity matches the season. The product label is the law, and treatment should never be based only on color.

Should I water a dormant lawn in winter?

Dormant grass usually needs much less water than actively growing turf, but the roots should not remain completely dry through an extended rainless period. The goal is to protect living plant tissue—not force green growth in January.

Before watering, check the soil rather than relying on the color of the blades. Brown dormant grass will not become green simply because it receives more irrigation. Probe the soil a few inches down in more than one location, particularly over shallow limestone and along sunny slopes.

Texas-specific winter watering considerations include:

  • Central Texas clay may look dry on the surface while remaining moist below.
  • Shallow Hill Country soil can dry faster because there is little soil volume over limestone.
  • DFW clay may stay saturated after rain, especially in low areas with poor drainage.
  • Irrigation near curbs and driveways may run off before penetrating compacted soil.
  • Freeze conditions can make irrigation unsafe and may create ice on sidewalks or streets.
  • Local watering rules may restrict days, times, or methods even during winter.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s bermudagrass calendar is blunt: irrigate only during the growing season months, and turn off or significantly reduce irrigation from late fall to early spring, when warm-season grasses are dormant and cooler temperatures, reduced growth, and natural rainfall usually meet their water needs. Over-irrigating in spring and fall also increases the incidence of large patch and take-all patch (Bermudagrass Home Lawn Management Calendar). Exceptions include southern Texas where turf does not go fully dormant, well-drained sandy soils, and newly laid sod. Austin Water’s homeowner guidance matches that: turn off your irrigation system for the winter, and warm-season turf such as St. Augustine and Bermuda goes dormant in winter and typically gets enough water from rainfall (Austin Water, Water Saving Tips).

Can fertilizer bring a dormant or dead lawn back?

Fertilizer does not revive dead grass, and applying high-nitrogen fertilizer to dormant warm-season turf can create new problems. Nutrients are most useful when the grass is actively growing and capable of using them.

AgriLife’s large-patch factsheet puts the fertilizer calendar in numbers: the ideal time to apply fertilizer is 6 weeks before the first frost and 3 weeks after green-up. Premature fertilization may encourage tender growth before another cold front. It can also feed weeds or contribute to runoff when roots are not actively taking up nutrients. In clay-heavy neighborhoods, adding fertilizer without checking soil and drainage can address the wrong limitation entirely.

Wait until the turf has resumed active growth and the cause of any persistent bare areas is understood. If the grass is alive but thin, the corrective plan may involve mowing height, light, irrigation coverage, compaction, or soil depth rather than fertilizer alone.

For dead sections, preparation matters more than trying to “wake up” old tissue. Remove the failed material, correct the underlying cause, and then repair the area with an appropriate grass and timing for that part of Texas.

What should I do if parts of the lawn are actually dead?

First, identify why the turf died. Replacing grass without correcting the cause often creates the same brown patch again.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Map the affected area and note whether the edges are sharp, circular, or irregular.
  2. Check sunlight at different times of day.
  3. Inspect soil depth, compaction, moisture, and drainage.
  4. Run the irrigation zone and watch the actual spray pattern.
  5. Examine crowns and runners at the border between living and dead turf.
  6. Look for active insects or disease signs rather than assuming they are present.
  7. Choose repair timing based on the grass species and local spring conditions.

In many newer subdivisions between Austin and Dallas, soil depth varies dramatically within the same lot. A dead strip beside a driveway may sit over compacted fill or construction material, while healthy turf nearby has several more inches of usable soil. Sod replacement alone will not solve that difference.

Shaded areas require the same realism. If St. Augustine repeatedly thins beneath a dense tree canopy, the durable fix may involve improving light, reducing competition, changing the landscape, or accepting a non-turf area. More fertilizer cannot replace sunlight.

How can I protect a dormant lawn until spring?

A dormant lawn does not need to look green to be healthy. Winter care is mostly about avoiding preventable damage while preserving the plant’s crowns and root zone.

  • Keep heavy traffic off saturated or frozen turf.
  • Remove thick piles of leaves that trap moisture and block light.
  • Avoid scalping the lawn during a warm spell.
  • Correct irrigation leaks and standing-water areas.
  • Do not fertilize merely to change winter color.
  • Monitor recurring patches after rain or prolonged cloud cover.
  • Photograph questionable areas every few weeks from the same position.
  • Mark the edge of a patch so you can see whether it expands.

In Central Texas, fallen live-oak leaves can accumulate after other deciduous leaves have already been cleared, so winter cleanup is not necessarily a one-time task. In DFW, freeze-thaw cycles and wet clay make traffic damage more likely. Across both metros, protecting the soil structure is often more important than trying to improve winter appearance.
