Cricket Season in Texas: Why They Swarm, and What Actually Stops Them

Texas cricket swarms peak from late summer into fall. Learn why they gather at lit doors, how long the swarm lasts, and what actually stops them.

Texas cricket season runs from late summer through the first real cold fronts of fall, and the single biggest cause of a cricket pile-up at your door is outdoor lighting — not a failure of pest control. Black field crickets do not breed indoors and will not establish a permanent infestation. They fly at night, they are drawn to bright buildings, and they come in under lit doorways.

That means the fix is mostly physical: change the lighting, seal the openings, and use a perimeter treatment as support rather than as the whole plan. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is unusually direct about this — when crickets are drawn to lighted buildings at night, they will keep causing problems "regardless of the amounts of insecticides used."

One local note on this particular year. Texas went into late August dry. As of the U.S. Drought Monitor's week ending August 18, 2026, 77.91% of Texas was abnormally dry or worse and 36.11% was in moderate drought or worse — against 31.49% and 20.04% on the same week a year ago. AgriLife's factsheet links the largest cricket outbreaks to years with dry springs and summers, so the precondition is in place across most of our service area. That is not a forecast, and the page below explains why nobody should sell you one.


Why are there suddenly so many crickets in Texas?

The crickets did not just arrive. They have been in the soil and ground cover all summer, feeding at night and staying out of the heat during the day. What changes in late August and September is their behavior, not their number.

Two things flip the switch:

  • Cool fronts. Wizzie Brown, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension integrated pest management specialist based in Austin, told AgriLife Today that the timing "revolves around cool fronts spurring increased activity." Crickets hatch in early spring, reach adulthood in about three months, and spend the worst of the summer looking for somewhere cool. When the first fronts knock the overnight temperatures down, adults become active, fly, and mate.
  • Light. Adults on mating flights orient to bright light. Buildings lit dusk-to-dawn collect them.

That combination is why swarms look random from the street and are not. Brown's description is precise: crickets gather in "pockets," so one block sees a wall of them and the next block barely notices.

AgriLife's cricket control factsheet (ENT-2003), written by extension urban entomologist Michael Merchant, adds the multi-year pattern: the largest outbreaks "seem to occur during years of dry springs and summers," with numbers highest in August and September "when a summer drought is broken by rainfall and cooler weather." One likely reason is less fungal disease among eggs and nymphs in dry soil — but the factsheet is careful to call that a partial explanation, not a settled mechanism.

Which is the honest version of this year's outlook. Most of Texas is dry, the calendar is right, and conditions favor an active season across Austin, Waco, Killeen-Temple, and DFW. Anyone quoting you a number for how bad it will be is guessing.

What kind of cricket is this — and will it infest my house?

The insects swarming Texas buildings in the fall are black field crickets, most of them in the Gryllus assimilis complex. This matters for one practical reason.

Field crickets do not breed indoors. ENT-2003 is explicit: they are primarily outdoor insects and "only accidental indoor invaders," and unlike house crickets — the species sold as reptile food — they "do not breed indoors or establish permanent indoor infestations."

So a cricket in your kitchen in September is a trespasser, not a colony. It got in under a door.

What they can do indoors is smaller but real: staining walls, drapes, or clothing with feces, and feeding damage on soiled or perspiration-stained fabric. They do not bite or sting.

The outdoor life cycle explains the season's shape. Females mature, develop wings, and lay eggs roughly two weeks later, preferring firm, bare soil. A single female may lay 150 to 400 eggs. Those eggs sit in the soil all winter and hatch the following spring — which is why a heavy fall does not mean a permanent problem, and why a bare, compacted strip along a foundation or a construction-scraped lot is a better egg-laying site than an established lawn.

How long does cricket season last?

Two different numbers get quoted, and both are correct because they measure different things:

  • The heaviest mating flights usually last only one to two weeks (ENT-2003). This is the part that feels like an emergency.
  • The whole mass-gathering window typically runs four to six weeks before numbers start to decline (Brown, AgriLife Today).

After that, crickets stay active at lower numbers until real cold arrives. In practice, a Texas property gets one or two genuinely bad weeks, a month or so of nuisance, and then it ends on its own.

That timeline should shape what you spend. The goal during the peak is to keep them off the building and out of the doorway — not to try to win a war of attrition against an insect that is leaving anyway.

Why do crickets swarm at some buildings and not others?

Because of the lights. ENT-2003 does not hedge: "Outdoor lighting is the most important single cause of severe cricket infestations around homes and commercial buildings."

Brown's list of the worst-hit locations is a list of all-night lighting: "the front doors of businesses, at gas stations, car dealerships and other businesses and locations that have highly luminous lighting that is on all night." For a house, she puts it plainly — if you have crickets, "it's probably in relation to lighting."

Not all light is equal. AgriLife ranks it:

The practical hierarchy for the next month:

  1. Off beats swapped. Turn off outdoor lights as early in the evening as practical.
  2. Floodlights that are decorative, not security, come off the schedule — or get cut to a few hours a night.
  3. What must stay on gets swapped to a bulb crickets are less drawn to.

Austin has a well-known precedent for step one: the University of Texas turned off the UT Tower lights years ago as a cricket-mitigation measure. If the fix works at that scale, it works on a porch.

Does spraying for crickets work?

Partly, and only as support. This is the part most homeowners get backwards, and it is worth being blunt about because it decides whether you waste money in September.

Indoor sprays are not effective for field crickets and are not recommended (ENT-2003). Since the crickets are not breeding inside, there is nothing indoors for a spray to break.

Outdoors, treatment does have a role. Insecticidal baits are granular products applied to ground cover and the areas next to buildings where crickets congregate. Liquid products applied around weep holes, doorways, and windows reduce the numbers that get in. Formulation matters on Texas exteriors: AgriLife notes that professionals should choose microencapsulated or wettable-powder formulations on brick and concrete for the longest-lasting control — which is a real difference between a licensed application and a hardware-store bottle on a porous masonry wall.

But the ceiling is set by the lights. ENT-2003's closing point is the one to take away: crickets drawn to a lit building at night "will continue to cause problems, regardless of the amounts of insecticides used."

Any company that answers a cricket call by selling you more product and saying nothing about your lighting is selling you the wrong thing.

What actually stops a cricket swarm

In order of how much they matter:

1. Cut the outdoor lighting. Off, shortened, or swapped to bug lights or low-pressure sodium. This is the whole ballgame and it costs nothing.

2. Seal the entry points. ENT-2003's list is specific: door thresholds, weep holes, soffits along the eaves, windows, and garage doors. Crickets are "especially likely to enter under doors at well-lighted entryways," and through cracks and openings around outdoor light fixtures — so inspect where the light is.

3. Fit door sweeps. Nylon-bristle or rubber-seal sweeps install quickly and, per AgriLife, "provide a dramatic reduction of crickets entering schools and other commercial buildings." For a lit front entry this is usually the highest-return physical fix after the lights themselves.

4. Plug weep holes temporarily. Steel or brass wool can be stuffed into weep holes as a short-term barrier that still allows air circulation. Do not caulk weep holes shut — they exist to drain and ventilate the wall.

5. Reduce harborage at the perimeter. Ground cover, clutter, and stacked material against the foundation give crickets somewhere to sit during the day.

6. Then treat the perimeter — granular bait where they congregate, liquid at entry points. Support, not solution.

7. Sweep up the dead ones. Piles decompose and smell, and the odor is what most people actually complain about.

Why cricket season is a business problem in Texas

Crickets are a nuisance at a house and a cost at a business, and Texas has the geography for it. Root Home Services' four service metros — Austin, Waco, Killeen-Temple, and DFW — sit on the I-35 corridor, which is also a nearly continuous line of the exact structures Brown names: gas stations, dealerships, distribution buildings, and retail frontage lit from dusk to dawn.

AgriLife puts the commercial cost plainly in ENT-2003's own photo caption: fall cricket flights "can be a cost for small businesses who lose customers and must pay for cleanup and disposal." During severe outbreaks, dead crickets pile up and cause odors, and customers are put off by masses of crickets on walls and sidewalks around stores and offices.

For a storefront, the September playbook is short: pull the decorative exterior lighting back to security-only hours, get sweeps on every customer-facing door, treat the perimeter before the first front rather than after the first pile, and schedule cleanup during the peak two weeks instead of reacting to it. That planning is part of commercial pest control in Texas, and it is worth setting up in August rather than the morning a manager sends a photo of the entryway.

What cricket season is telling you about the rest of your fall

Here is the useful part of a cricket problem: it is a free audit.

Every gap a cricket walks through in September is a gap something less harmless walks through in November. The same door thresholds, weep holes, soffit gaps, and garage-door seals are the entry points for the pests that overwinter in Texas homes, and the same porch light that concentrates crickets also concentrates the insects that feed the spiders showing up on Texas porches this time of year. A soaking fall rain can send a different accidental invader through those same ground-level gaps: millipedes leaving saturated soil and leaf litter.
