Texas A&M's Field Guide to Common Texas Insects states millipedes do not bite, but when disturbed they can produce an irritating fluid from repugnatorial glands that can irritate eyes, blister the skin, produce an unpleasant odor, and cause allergic reactions in venom-sensitive people. Some species can squirt their fluids several inches. AgriLife's ENTO-PU-020 adds that millipedes are not poisonous, that the smelly fluid is especially irritating if rubbed in the eyes, and that you should wash your hands with soap and water until the odor is completely gone. The Insects in the City post documents itchy red stains on a child's hands after rolling a millipede between them, and notes some species can emit secretions that stain and even blister skin.
Avoid picking them up with bare hands, especially if you have sensitive skin. Wash exposed skin and keep hands away from the eyes. Pets should also be discouraged from chewing or playing with them because the defensive secretion may irritate the mouth.
The bigger household problem is usually the number of millipedes and the staining or odor that can result when they are crushed. Light-colored garage floors, baseboards, and rugs are better handled with a vacuum than a shoe or broom.
