What actually comes up out of the rock — and how far does it travel?
The measurable link between the void network and your back porch is the cave cricket.
Central Texas cave crickets (Ceuthophilus spp.) are trogloxenes: they roost in caves and voids during the day and forage above ground at night, then go back down. They're the main way energy gets into these cave systems in the first place — they eat on the surface and their guano and eggs feed everything below.
And their range is documented. In foraging studies of the secret cave cricket (Ceuthophilus secretus), crickets were found foraging up to 105 meters — about 345 feet — from cave entrances, at relatively uniform densities out to 80 meters (Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Section 6 research report).
Three hundred forty-five feet is a Cedar Park cul-de-sac. It's the distance from a preserve boundary to a backyard fence, and it is the reason those big, humpbacked, alarmingly jumpy crickets show up in Cedar Park garages and never seem to show up in, say, a Blackland-clay subdivision out east.
Now put that next to what Texas A&M AgriLife documents about our signature pest. The striped bark scorpion (Centruroides vittatus) is the most widely distributed scorpion in Texas — it's found in every county. It doesn't burrow. It's an active forager that shelters in cracks and under debris and hunts at night, it's strongly attracted to moisture, and it gets inside through gaps around pipes, doors, and rooflines (Texas A&M AgriLife, Striped Bark Scorpion; AgriLife Urban Entomology, Centruroides vittatus). AgriLife's own control guidance says the levers are: eliminate harborage, reduce moisture, and remove the prey insects.
Set those documented facts side by side and the Cedar Park picture is straightforward: fractured limestone gives cracks-and-voids harborage, the void network runs a nightly insect commute across the surface, and a predator that lives in cracks and hunts insects at night has everything it needs — food, shelter, and humidity — without ever leaving your foundation line. That's an inference from the sources, not a claim any one study makes. But it's why "spray the baseboards" doesn't fix a Cedar Park scorpion problem.

Why is July the worst month for this in Cedar Park?
Because the contrast between above and below gets extreme.
Williamson County came through a punishing dry stretch this year — January through March 2026 was the county's driest year-to-date in 132 years of records (Drought.gov, Williamson County conditions). Central Texas has improved since: as of the July 7, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor, roughly 32% of Texas was in active drought with another 15% abnormally dry, and extreme drought (D3) had been cleared out of North and Central Texas entirely (U.S. Drought Monitor, Texas). The outlook still favors above-normal temperatures with little help from summer rain.
So the surface is hot and dry, and the voids underneath are humid and stable. Every moisture-seeking arthropod in the neighborhood is doing the same math. The wet, cool places left above ground are the ones you made: the irrigation-damp strip along the foundation, the AC condensate line, the mulch bed, the garage slab, the toilet flange in the guest bath.
